Everyday Advocacy (Partner Webinar)

Oct. 16, 2019, 3pm-4pm ET

Description

This event is offered in partnership with Washington Nonprofits

Your nonprofit is building something important. You and your colleagues are creating a structure that allows you to fully achieve your mission and make your community vibrant and strong. Your organization's "house" should include a structure for public policy advocacy. But what does that mean? How do you get ready to step into advocacy? What should your organization be doing everyday to be ready?

This workshop will cover the foundations of advocacy for nonprofits. These are steps all nonprofits should take to be ready to speak on behalf of their cause. You do not need to understand legal rules or register as a lobbyist to take these steps to strengthen your organization.

This webinar will introduce key principles in Washington Nonprofit's new toolkit, Build A Movement!

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:
  • List key people on your team (both inside and outside your organization) and what role they will play.
  • Describe one aspect of your organization's culture that supports (or could support!) your advocacy work.
  • Explain where advocacy shows up in your organization's current planning documents.
  • Tell a story that illustrates why a policy change will make a difference in your community.
  • Name at least one activity related to advocacy that you will move forward within your organization.

Intended Audience
This webinar is for any nonprofit staff or board who want to lay the groundwork for their organization to advocate for its mission. The principles we lay out in Part 1 are valuable to any mission-driven nonprofit organization, regardless of whether they intend to lobby for public policy changes. They are also foundational elements that your organization should put in place prior to beginning to lobby. This is the place to start, especially if you still need to build buy-in internally about the value of advocacy.
