Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter

The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services is seeking a progressive, organized, outgoing, compassionate professional leader to advance our mission to end homelessness in Maine one person, one family, and one child at a time. 

The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter began working with the homeless in central Maine in the 1980s. In 1990, it became an official nonprofit organization.  The shelter has seen tremendous growth from 8 beds inside a religious building to a 48 bed facility.  In addition, 2 years ago 11 efficiency apartments were established on the second floor for our Youth Empowerment Services providing long-term housing for youth ages 18 to 24.  The name was changed to add & Servicesto reflect the diverse work of prevention and programming that the shelter now offers.  The shelter provides employment to 28 staff members.  The executive director works harmoniously with a board of directors consisting of 17 community members.  More information can be found on our website, www.shelterme.org and on our Facebook page.

Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director is responsible for the successful leadership and management according to the mission, vision, and values of the organization.  The executive director implements the long-term strategy for the shelter to reach its goals and achieve its mission.  As a spokesperson to the community and civic organization, the executive director is the face of the organization.

The candidate for this position must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.  In addition, the applicant must have experience in leadership, management, public speaking, and fund development.

Other attributes that the executive search committee seeks
  • Knowledge of homelessness and its causes
  • Understanding of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders
  • Local, regional or statewide advocacy and/or public policy experience
  • Understanding of the nonprofit sector with a commitment to serve Maine’s nonprofit community
  • Written and oral communication skills to establish strong community relations
  • Financial management experience
  • Short-term and long-range planning goals developed in partnership with the board of directors
