Part-time Assistant Volunteer Coordinator

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals seeks qualified applicants for a Part-time Assistant Volunteer Coordinator. Under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and MSSPA management personnel, the assistant volunteer coordinator is responsible for supporting the Volunteer Coordinator with all assigned activities, including interactions/communications with current and prospective volunteers, corporate, and community volunteer groups. The position includes assisting with school tours, field trips, fee-for-service birthday parties and special community events.  

  • Assists the Volunteer Coordinator in managing the MSSPA’s volunteer program, including recruiting, training, retaining, and communicating with the volunteer base
  • Assists the Volunteer Coordinator in maintaining email communication with prospective and current volunteers
  • Assists the Volunteer Coordinator in maintaining the electronic and physical calendars for the volunteer program and events
  • Manages volunteer groups as assigned and scheduled: provides tours and information, sets up volunteer projects, and manages the projects with staff assistance
  • Assists the Volunteer Coordinator in developing and delivering humane education programming to the public and visitors to the shelter
  • Implement strategies for periodic volunteer recognition; improve the volunteer retention rate.
  • Interacting with volunteer database (data entry, reporting, analysis).
  • Organizing and maintaining supplies
  • Greets and assists shelter visitors.
  • Assists as requested at special events
  • Other duties as assigned by volunteer coordinator or management personnel.
  • High School diploma, or equivalent. 
  • Ability to learn and take direction from others as directed by Volunteer Coordinator; also possesses ability to work independently. 
  • Compliance with all MSSPA employee policies.
  • Employee must be able to be physically active for up to eight hours each shift; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Clean criminal history; background check required.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Maintain a regular weekly schedule (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday 800AM-400PM); adjust weekly schedule as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
  • This position benefits from a working knowledge of animal welfare, childhood education, and solid communication skills. Equine experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficient with MS Office and Google Suite.

  • Additional:
    Estimated 24 hours per week with flexibility around special events and busier seasons.
  • Estimated start date: August 2019.
  • Approximately 50% desk/screen time and 50% physical activity.
