Located in Thomaston, Maine, Trekkers is a non-profit, outdoor-based mentoring program that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. Trekkers began in 1994 and offered programs to a small group of local students from 7th to 12th grades living year-round in the small fishing communities of Cushing, St. George, and Thomaston. Over two decades later, Trekkers has completed an expansion plan that has significantly increased overall student enrollment and serves more than 200 students a year in its core programs.

About this Position

Trekkers has now become a key part of the midcoast community and has impacted the lives of hundreds of students and families who have been involved with the program. With the growth in organizational structure and programmatic success, there is an increased need for a philanthropy program that supports this work. Trekkers is about to celebrate its 25 anniversary and is launching a program to train practitioners from across the country in our youth development principles. We are at a transformational moment in our history and this position will have a substantial role in the continued growth and success of Trekkers.

Position Summary

The Director of Development will be responsible for raising private and public funding, with a particular focus on the creation of an individual major giving program. In keeping with the culture of Trekkers, the Director will be a thoughtful, creative and relationship-focused fundraiser who has a proven track record of success planning, initiating and sustaining successful fundraising strategies. This role will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, the Grant Writer -Development Associate, the Trekkers staff, a passionate Board of Directors, and members of the Midcoast Maine community.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an overall development strategy and plans to secure funding to support Trekkers’ mission and programming;
  • Oversee all of Trekkers fundraising activities and communications, including major giving, planned giving, annual giving, events, business sponsorship and community engagement;
  • Develop and execute an individual major giving program, capitalizing on Trekker’s existing relationships and building new ones. Work closely with the Executive Director to identify, engage, cultivate and solicit individuals and foundations with the capacity to give a major gift (>$1,000);
  • Develop and execute the annual giving campaign, including annual appeals, email and social media campaigns;
  • Develop and execute a planned giving program;
  • Partner with key staff and board on Trekker’s annual fundraising events, which include with a goal of maximizing fundraising results. Annual events include: a 5K run, art auction, battle of the bands, and a new and highly successful “fired up foodie event”;
  • Work closely with the Board and coordinate the activities of the Development Committee; and
  • Oversee and manage Trekkers’ eTapestry Constituent Relationships Management tool system.

Position Requirements:

  • A minimum of eight-years’ experience and a proven track record of creating and cultivating a base of donors for a non-profit organization. Experience soliciting gifts of $10,000+ from both individuals and foundations;
  • Passion for the mission of Trekkers - including youth development, education and community-building - and the ability to serve as an ambassador for the organization;
  • Demonstrated ability to foster solid relationships with Board Members, volunteers, and community members;
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and moves management systems, including deep understanding of fundraising software tools;
  • Aptitude for metrics and the use of data to inform decisions and goal-setting;
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and frame funding needs in a way that is compelling to prospects and donors; and
  • A desire to be a part of a tight-knit community and a committed team of mentors and educators.
